What I'm Learning

What I am Learning....ABC's for CEO's!

I believe education never ends. It is Kindergarten to 100. The late Charles Tremendous
Jones said, “You are the same person 5 years from now as you are today, except for
two things the books you read and the people you meet.”

As a reader of two books a week, I am often asked, what is your newest read? Because
I am in airports frequently, I have time to read while others are taking naps or staring
into space. I have given you some of my gleanings from my most recent readings in alphabet form...A-Z.

A IS FOR... ATTITUDE

Happiness_1

“Attitude”
The longer I live, the more that I realize the impact of attitude on life.
Attitude, to me, is more important than facts.
It is more important than…
the past,
education,
money,
circumstances,
failures,
successes,
what other people think or say or do.
It is more important than…
appearance,
giftedness,
or a skill.
It will make or break a company, a church, or a home.
The remarkable thing is that we have a choice every day
regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.
We cannot change our past.
Nor can we change the fact that people will act in a certain way.
We also cannot change the inevitable.
The only thing that we can do is…
to play on the one string that we have,
and that is our attitude.
I am convinced that life is 10 % what happens to me
and 90 % how I react to it.
And so it is with you…
We are in charge of our attitudes.

B is for... BALANCE

Untitled1.png

Matt Lauer of NBC’s Today show recently interviewed President Bush in the Oval
Office. He asked, “How do you balance your life?” The President said, “ my faith,
my family, my friends and being President in that order.”
I was encouraged to hear that the President and I share the same priorities.
It is the commitment to these priorities that help balance my work and family life.
Priority # 1 - Faith
Everyone has a ministry. The word ministry means “to serve others. People need a
cement and center in theses days of uncertainty and challenge.
Priority # 2 – Family
I have been married 76 years to the same woman… actually 38 years a piece. We have 4
wonderful children, Heather, Heidi, Hans and Heston and 12 gorgeous grandchildren.
They are my life. The average father spends 30 seconds per day with his children and 3
minutes a day communicating with his spouse according to Focus on the Family.. To
change the cycle:
• Have a “date with your mate.” once a week.
• Spend one on one time with your children.
• Establish memorable family traditions
• Tell your children you love them especially your teenager.
Priority # 3 – Friends
• Cherish your friends.
• Write appreciation notes to your friends. Tell them how much you care.
• Treat everyone you meet as if they were dead at midnight.
Priority # 4- Career.
• Love what you do. Do what you love and do it better than anyone else.
• There are no U-Haul trailers behind the hearse.
• Nobody dies with their in-box empty.
• “Live, Love and leave a legacy”-Covey
• Nobody dies with their inbox empty
• Nobody on their death bed says I wish I could give 15 more minutes to my company.
We live and die for our careers. We realize too late the importance our kids Friday
afternoon soccer game. We strive to climb “rung by rung” to the top of the ladder. We
believe we have “arrived” when we obtain the corner office. When we look back on our
career we often find that the “ladder” was leaning against the wrong wall. We were
successful at the office, but a failure at home. Why? Misplaced priorities.

C IS FOR... CARING

C caring.png

DO YOU REALLY CARE ABOUT YOUR EMPLOYEES?
• TALENT, MORE THAN EXPERIENCE, IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS.
• DON’T MANAGE BY JUST BREAD ALONE…PAY AND BENEFITS.
• GIVE PLENTY OF RECOGNITION AND APPRECIATION.
• 65% NEVER HEAR THE WORD THANK YOU ON A DAY TO DAY BASIS.
• 75% NEVER SEE THE WORD THANK YOU IN WRITING
• 95% NEVER HEAR THE WORD THANK YOU IN A PUBLIC MEETING.
• LET PEOPLE KNOW WHAT IS EXPECTED OF THEM MONTHLY.
• HAVE THE TOOLS AVAILABLE TO EMPOWER THE EMPLOYEE.
• CHALLENGE THE EMPLOYEE… BUILDING ON THEIR STRENGTHS.
• SEND THEM TO COURSES TO BUILD THEIR STRENGTHS NOT UNDEVELOPED
STRENGTHS.
• GIVE THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO WHAT THEY DO BEST EVERYDAY.
• ALLOW THEM TO MAKE A CONTRIBUTION.
• LISTEN TO THEIR IDEAS NO MATTER HOW TRIVIAL.
• LET THEM FEEL IN ON THINGS… A PART OF THE TEAM.
• THE ORGANIZATION THAT KEEPS ITS BEST PEOPLE WINS.
• REMEMBER YOUR STARS ARE BEING CODDLED, AND COURTED BY THE
COMPETITION.
• FACT: WORKERS WHO ARE HIGHLY COMMITTED TO THEIR EMPLOYER AND HAVE
CONFIDENCE AND TRUST IN TOP MANAGEMENT DELIVER DRAMATICALLY HIGHER
RETURNS TO THE SHAREHOLDERS.
• THERE IS A DEFINITE CORRELATION BETWEEN WORKPLACE SATISFACTION AND
EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION.
• THE NUMBER ONE REASON I JOIN AN ORGANIZATION IS TO BE RECOGNIZED. THE
NUMBER ONE REASON I LEAVE IS BECAUSE I WASN’T.
• EMPLOYEES PSYCHES NEED A STEADY DIET OF RECOGNITION AND APPRECIATION OR
ELSE THEIR ENERGY, COMMITMENT AND TRUST WILL FADE.
• “43% OF EMPLOYEES ARE NOT JUST SUSPICIOUS, THEY FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT
MANAGEMENT LIES AND IS TRYING TO CHEAT THEM.”- NATIONAL PRODUCTIVITY

D IS FOR... DIVERSITY

D Diversity.png

MUCH HAS BEEN WRITTEN ABOUT DIVERSITY. MY DEFINITION OF DIVERSITY IS, “
CELEBRATING THE SPECIALTIES AND TALENTS EACH ONE OF US BRING TO THE
WORKPLACE.” EACH OF US IS DIFFERENT. HOWEVER, THE STRONGER THE EMPHASIS ON
DIFFERENCES, THE GREATER THE OPPORTUNITY FOR POLARIZATION.
PEOPLE’S DIVERSITY PRACTICES CAN BUILD OR DESTROY THE COMPANY’S BOTTOM
LINE
• DIVERSITY IS AN APPLICANT JOINING AN ORGANIZATION WHERE HE OR SHE WILL BE
TREATED WITH DIGNITY AND RESPECT REGARDLESS OF RACE, ETHNIC BACKGROUND,
NATIONAL ORIGIN, RELIGION, CULTURE OR GENDER.
• DIVERSITY IS MODELING..
• DIVERSITY IS NOT AN OBLIGATION BUT AN OPPORTUNITY.
• DIVERSITY PLAYED OUT IN THE WORKPLACE WILL RESULT IN AN ASSOCIATE BEING
MORE AT EASE, MORE PRODUCTIVE AND MORE COMMITTED TO THE SUCCESS OF THE
ORGANIZATION.
• DIVERSITY IS AN EMPLOYEE BEHAVING IN A POSITIVE MANNER THAT DEMONSTRATES
TRUE RESPECT FOR HIS OR HER CO-WORKER.
• DIVERSITY IS NOT OWNED BY HUMAN RESOURCES BUT BY LEADERSHIP AND EACH
INDIVIDUAL.
• DIVERSITY IS NOT JUST GIVING BUY-IN. IT IS A PERSONAL COMMITMENT.
• FORM A ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY THAT SAYS, “YOU HARASS, DISCRIMINATE OR
TREAT ANOTHER INDIVIDUAL IN THIS ORGANIZATION WITHOUT DIGNITY AND RESPECT,
YOU WILL BE TERMINATED.”
HOW DO YOU VIEW YOUR ASSOCIATES? TAKE THE TEST. WHICH CATEGORY WOULD YOU
CIRCLE?
• I APPRECIATE EACH OF MY ASSOCIATES.
• I ACCEPT EACH OF MY ASSOCIATES.
• I TOLERATE SOME OF MY ASSOCIATES.
• I AVOID SOME OF MY ASSOCIATES
• I AM REPULSED BY SOME OF MY ASSOCIATES
WHAT YOU CIRCLED WILL DETERMINE THE PRODUCTIVITY OF YOUR WORKFORCE AND
YOUR CURRENT LEVEL OF MORALE IN YOUR ORGANIZATION. TIE INDIVIDUAL
COMPENSATION TO THE ACHIEVEMENT OF DIVERSITY GOALS.

E IS FOR... ENTITLEMENT

e excellence.png

WE ARE LIVING IN A DAY OF ENTITLEMENT...WHEN EVERYONE GETS A TROPHY, EVEN FOR
COMING IN LAST PLACE...IT IS NOT ALL ABOUT ME! IT IS ALL ABOUT OTHERS
WHEN YOU MEET LOU HOLTZ, HE SAYS, “WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU?”
WE ARE LIVING IN A SELFISH, ALL ABOUT ME, SELF-SERVING WORLD. GREED AND
ARROGANCE SEEM TO BE THE BUZZWORDS.
THERE IS NO GREATER “TURNOFF THAN TO MEET SOMEONE WHO IS ARROGANT, ALOOF AND
HAS AN INFLATED EGO. HERE ARE SOME THOUGHTS ON KEEPING YOUR EGO IN CHECK
ALWAYS REMEMBERING THAT:
• THERE IS A FINE LINE BETWEEN CONFIDENCE AND ARROGANCE.
• THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH SELF CONFIDENCE.
• A HEALTHY EGO MAKES A LEADER CONFIDENT, CLEARHEADED, ABLE TO COPE WITH
CHANGE.
• A LEADER MUST HAVE SELF CONFIDENCE IN ORDER TO CREATE “FOLLOWERSHIP.”
• EXCESSIVE EGO CAN MAKE ONE PROMISE MORE THAN THEY CAN DELIVER.
• EXCESSIVE EGO CAN CAUSE A LEADER TO IGNORE AND WALK OVER OTHER PEOPLE.
• ABUNDANT SELF-REGARD CAN KILL A CORPORATE CAREER.
JACK WELCH THREW HIMSELF INTO THE PIT AT GE’S MANAGEMENT CENTER IN
CROTONVILLE, NY WHERE HE INVITED HIS LEADERSHIP TEAM TO RELAY CRITICISM, RIFFS
ABOUT HIS MISTAKES. HE WANTED FEEDBACK ON HOW HE WAS DOING AS A LEADER. HE
WAS TRANSPARENT IN FRONT OF HIS TEAM.
REMEMBER…
“EGO IS FINE AS LONG AS TALENT IS IN EQUAL PROPORTION”-MICHAEL EISNER, DISNEY
“IF YOU AREN’T CURIOUS, YOU BECOME ARROGANT.”-JACK WELCH, FORMER CEO, GE

F is for... FISHLOSOPHY

f fish.png

DO YOU HAVE THE RIGHT FISHLOSOPHY OF LIFE?
A RECENT READING LEAD ME TO THE BOOK FISH!, THE STORY OF THE WORLD FAMOUS
PIKE PLACE FISH MARKET IN SEATTLE. I CONSIDER IT TO BE THE NEW VENUE OF
EXCEEDING THE CUSTOMERS EXPECTATIONS. I HAVE PERSONALLY VISITED THE MARKET.
WHAT YOU SEE IS TRULY WHAT YOU GET. EMPLOYEES LOVE COMING TO WORK. THEY
ACTUALLY WANT TO BE THERE!! THEY HAVE FOUR STEPS TO MAKE THEIR ENVIRONMENT
INFECTIOUS:
• MAKE “FUN A PART OF YOUR VOCABULARY
-ASK YOURSELF, WHAT CAN I DO TO MAKE MY WORK MORE ENJOYABLE?
• MAKE SOMEBODY’S DAY
-WHAT CAN I DO TO MAKE MY ENERGY MORE CONTAGIOUS?
-WHAT CAN I DO THAT WOULD BRING A SMILE TO SOMEONE ELSE’S FACE?
-WHAT CAN I DO TO BRING A SMILE TO MY OWN FACE?
• BE THERE FOR OTHERS
-WHAT CAN I DO TO SHOW I AM REALLY LISTENING TO MY INTERNAL AND
EXTERNAL CUSTOMERS?
• CHOOSE YOUR ATTITUDE
-HOW DID I START MY DAY WHEN MY FEET HIT THE FLOOR?
-DID I HAVE A “POSITUDE” (POSITIVE ATTITUDE) TODAY?
-WHAT ATTITUDE WILL I CHOOSE TOMORROW?
TIPS TO REMEMBER AND ASK YOURSELF:
• IS YOUR DEPARTMENT FILLED WITH ENERGY AND ENTHUSIASM?
• HAVE YOU CREATED A MOTIVATIONAL ENVIRONMENT FOR YOUR PEOPLE?
• HAVE YOU RAISED THE SPIRIT AND MORALE OF THE TROOPS THIS WEEK?
• DO YOU HAVE A “ ATTENTION TO RETENTION” PLAN IN PLACE?

G is for...GREAT

g great.png

AS A READER OF TWO LEADERSHIP BOOKS A WEEK, I WAS RECENTLY FLYING BACK FROM
SYRACUSE AND HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO READ JACK WELCH’S NEWEST RELEASE,
GET BETTER OR GET BEATEN. HERE ARE SOME “GLEANINGS FROM MY READING.”
JACK WELCH’S FOUR LEADERSHIP SECRETS ARE:
LEADERSHIP SECRET # 1 FACE REALITY
• EVERY EMPLOYEE HAS A $10,000 DOLLAR IDEA THEY WOULD LIKE TO SHARE, BUT
THEY ARE NEVER ASKED.
• HOLD “CRANIUM CRAM SESSIONS” WHERE BRAINSTORMING IS THE NORM AND
WHERE THUNDERBOLT THINKING CAN TAKE PLACE.
LEADERSHIP SECRET # 2 MANAGING LESS IS MANAGING BETTER
• A MANAGER SHOULD FACILITATE AND SIMPLIFY RATHER THAN CONTROL AND
COMPLICATE.
• CREATE MORE DECISION MAKING AT THE LOWER LEVELS OF THE ORGANIZATION
• KEEP FROM “MICRO” OR “MOMMY” MANAGING.
LEADERSHIP SECRET #3- CREATE A VISION, THEN GET OUT OF THE WAY
• KEEP THE VISION IN FRONT OF THE PEOPLE AT ALL TIMES
• SPEND TIME WITH YOUR TEAM SHARING THE MISSION AND VISION.
• REMEMBER, “WHERE THERE IS NO VISION, THE PEOPLE PERISH.”-THE BIBLE
LEADERSHIP SECRET # 4- HARNESS CHANGE
• COMPROMISE AND MEDIOCRITY BREEDS COMPLACENCY.
• CHANGE BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE. BE OPEN TO IT. FORGET THE PAST.
“THE WORD MANAGER TODAY IS VIEWED AS ONE WHO CONTROLS, AND IS COLD,
UNCARING, BUTTONED DOWN AND PASSIONLESS. I HAVE NEVER ASSOCIATED THE WORD
PASSION WITH THE WORD MANAGER, YET I HAVE NEVER SEEN A LEADER WITHOUT IT,”
-JACK WELCH
JIM COLLINS SAYS IN HIS BOOK GOOD TO GREAT THAT GOOD IS THE ENEMY OF GREAT.
HE SAYS:
• GET THE RIGHT PEOPLE ON YOUR BUS.
• GET THE WRONG PEOPLE OFF THE BUS.
• GET THE RIGHT PEOPLE IN THE RIGHT SEATS ON THE BUS
• THEN FIGURE OUT WHERE TO DRIVE THE BUS AND SOME MAY NOT MAKE THE RIDE.
IT’S ABOUT GETTING THE RIGHT PEOPLE BEFORE CREATING THE STRATEGY AND PEOPLE
BUY INTO THE LEADER BEFORE THEY BUY INTO THE STRATEGY.

H IS FOR... HEROES

h hero.png

WE NEED HEROES IN A WORLD OF WRONG ROLE MODELS!
WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF A HERO? (CHOOSE ONE)
• A LEGENDARY DIVINE FIGURE ENDOWED WITH GREAT ABILITY AND STRENGTH
• A SANDWICH CONTAINING AN ASSORTMENT OF MEAT, CHEESES AND CONDIMENTS
• A LEADER WHO WALKS THE TALK IN FRONT OF HIS OR HER PEOPLE RESULTING IN
THEM WANTING TO FOLLOW THAT LEADER.
WHO IS YOUR HERO OR HEROINE?_____________________________________
WE ALL HAVE THEM. MY HERO IS MY DAD. AT 82 YEARS OF AGE, HE HAS BEEN A
CONSISTENT LEADER IN BOTH OUR HOME AND CHURCH. AS I HAVE GROWN OLDER, I HAVE
APPRECIATED HIS SELFLESS SACRIFICIAL GIVING TO OTHERS, TO HIS GRANDCHILDREN AND
GREAT GRANDCHILDREN. I TRUST I WILL FOLLOW IN HIS STEPS.HE IS UNWAVERING IN HIS
EXAMPLE. SEE IF YOU AGREE WITH THESE “HEROIC” STATEMENTS.
• “HEROIC SERVICE DOES NOT COME FROM POLICY MANUALS. I T COMES FROM
PEOPLE WHO CARE…AND FROM A CULTURE THAT ENCOURAGES AND MODELS THAT
ATTITUDE”-VALERIE OBERLE, DISNEY GUEST RELATIONS
• THE MORE CYNICAL WE ARE, THE LESS LIKELY WE ARE TO HAVE HEROES.
-WILLIAM BENNETT, BOOK OF VIRTUES
• “UNHAPPY THE LAND THAT NEEDS HEROES.”-GALILEO
• “EVERYONE IS CAPABLE OF GREATNESS, EVERYONE NEEDS A HERO”-GREG BLAKE
HERO OF THE DAY IDEA:
CREATE A “HEROES” AWARD AT YOUR OFFICE FOR YOUR HEROES OF THE MOMENT
GIVE THEM A HERO SANDWICH LUNCH AT A RESTAURANT. HEROES STANDS FOR:
HONORING, ENCOURAGING, REWARDING, OUTSTANDING, EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE
I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR WHO YOU WOULD CHOOSE AS YOUR HERO IS AND WHY YOU CHOSE
THEM!

I IS FOR...INFLUENCE

i influence.png

EVERYDAY YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO INFLUENCE OTHERS.
ARE YOU UNDER THE INFLUENCE? I THANKFULLY HAVE NEVER HAD TO BE ASKED THAT
QUESTION. I BELIEVE IT IS A GREAT QUESTION TO ASK WHEN IT COMES TO OUR INFLUENCE
IN THE WORKPLACE AND OUR COMMUNITY.
INFLUENCE. WE ALL HAVE IT. ONE CURRENT WRITER STATES THAT EACH OF US
INFLUENCES AT LEAST 10,000 PEOPLE IN OUR LIVES. PARENTS ARE INFLUENCED BY THEIR
PEERS. CHILDREN ARE INFLUENCED BY THEIR FRIENDS. LEADERS INFLUENCE FOLLOWERS.
UNFORTUNATELY, WE HAVE NO IDEA HOW OUR INFLUENCE IMPACTED AND AFFECTED
OTHERS UNTIL OUR FUNERAL.
WHO ARE THE INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOU?
THE POWER OF INFLUENCE IS REFLECTED IN THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:
• NAME THE THREE WEALTHIEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD.
• NAME THE PERSON WHO TOOK THE SECOND SOLO FLIGHT AROUND THE WORLD.
• NAME FOUR PEOPLE WHO HAVE WON THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE.
HOW DID YOU DO? MOST OF US DO NOT REMEMBER THE HEADLINES IN YESTERDAY’S PAPER
BECAUSE ACHIEVEMENTS ARE SOON FORGOTTEN.
BUT TRY THIS…
• NAME THREE TEACHERS WHO INFLUENCED YOU IN SCHOOL.
• NAME FOUR MENTORS WHO HAVE TAUGHT YOU A VALUABLE LESSON.
• NAME FIVE FRIENDS WHO HAVE HELPED YOU THROUGH A DIFFICULT PERIOD IN
YOUR LIFE.
YOU SEE, THE PEOPLE WHO TRULY MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN OUR LIVES ARE NOT THE ONES
WITH THE MOST CREDENTIALS. THEY ARE OUR TEACHERS, MENTORS AND FRIENDS.
INFLUENTIAL IDEA
WRITE HANDWRITTEN LETTER TO THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE INFLUENCED YOU AND MADE A
DIFFERENCE IN YOUR LIFE BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.

J IS FOR... JOE

j joe.png

FORTUNE MAGAZINE RAN AN ARTICLE IN APRIL 2001 ON THE PERFECT MODEL FOR
TODAY’S CORPORATE LEADER...JOE TORRE, MANAGER OF THE YANKEES.
FOR 5 YEARS HE HAS TAKEN A COLLECTION OF ROOKIES, RETREADS, RECOVERING DRUG
ADDICTS, CUBAN DEFECTORS AND BORN AGAIN CHRISTIANS AND CREATED A WORKPLACE
THAT WOULD QUALIFY FOR FORTUNE’S LIST OF 100 BEST PLACES TO WORK IN AMERICA.
HERE ARE 7 WAYS HOW TORRE SUCCESSFULLY MANAGES THE YANKEES:
• HE HAS THE ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND WHAT MOTIVATES PEOPLE.
• “IT IS EASIER FOR 25 PLAYERS TO UNDERSTAND ONE MANAGER THAN FOR ONE
MANAGER TO UNDERSTAND 25 PLAYERS.”-TORRE
• HE BELIEVES IN ONE ON ONE ENCOUNTERS WITH EACH PLAYER.
• HE BELIEVES IN A HIGH PERFORMANCE WORKPLACE WHERE FAILURE IS ROUTINELY
TOLERATED.
• HE NEVER BERATES HIS PLAYERS. HE CRIES WITH THEM.
• HE MANAGES COUNTER CYCLICALLY. AS THE SITUATION GROWS MORE INTENSE, HE
GROWS MORE CALM. PLAYERS CALL THIS TORRE’S CALM BOMBS.
• HE HAS THREE RULES FOR THE YANKEES. BE ON TIME, NO EXCESSIVE FACIAL HAIR
AND NO LOUD NOISE IN THE LOCKER ROOM.
THE REASON FOR THE LAST RULE? TORRE HATES LOUD NOISE DUE TO GROWING UP
EXTREMELY FRIGHTENED BY HIS FATHER’S VIOLENT TIRADES.
JOE TORRE HAS THE SURGICAL ABILITY TO MEND A PLAYER’S SELF CONFIDENCE DUE TO
BEING OVERWEIGHT AS A KID AND BEING CALLED A “FAT KID” ALL HIS LIFE.
PITCHER DAVID WELLS LOST A 9-0 LEAD IN 1998. TORRE WAS TROUBLED BY THE BODY
LANGUAGE ON THE MOUND, THE KICKING OF DIRT AND LACK OF EYE CONTACT WITH TORRE
IN THE DUGOUT. TORRE ASKED, WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? WELLS SAID, “I FEEL LIKE YOU
DON’T SHOW CONFIDENCE IN ME. HE ACCUSED THE COACH OF WARMING UP RELIEVERS TOO
QUICKLY AS IF EXPECTING HIM TO FAIL.
KNOWING THIS WAS DAVID’S PERCEPTION AND THAT PERCEPTION MANY TIMES IS
REALITY, HE BEGAN WAITING LONGER TO WARM UP PITCHERS. THE NEXT DAY WELLS
WENT OUT AND PITCHED A PERFECT GAME. TORRE HAD DONE THE GREATEST
MOTIVATIONAL ACT......HE HAD LISTENED TO HIS PLAYER.
DO YOU LISTEN TO YOUR PEOPLE’S IDEAS AND OPINIONS? MANY TIMES THEY KNOW HOW
TO DO THE JOB BETTER THAN YOU DO AS THEIR COACH AND LEADER.

K IS FOR... KIDS

k kids.png

KISS YOUR KIDS GOODBYE IN THE MORNING. ON DECEMBER 1ST A FEW YEARS AGO, I WAS
TAKING MY MORNING WALK, WHEN I HEARD THE SOUNDS OF SIRENS, AMBULANCES AND
FIRE TRUCKS HEADING DOWN THE ROAD. I SAID TO MYSELF, “ MUST BE ANOTHER BAD
ACCIDENT ON THE INTERSTATE.”
WHEN I RETURNED HOME FROM MY WALK, THE PHONE RANG. MY 20 YEAR OLD SON HANS
WAS CALLING ME TO SAY , “DAD, I’M OKAY, BUT I HAVE BEEN IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT AND
I NEED YOUR SUPPORT. I RUSHED TO WHERE HE WAS IN MY JOGGING OUTFIT. THERE WAS
MY SON’S CAR IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD TOTALLY DESTROYED. YOU CAN REPLACE
CARS, BUT YOU CAN’T REPLACE YOUR KIDS.
I HUGGED MY SON IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD WITH MORNING TRAFFIC GOING BY. A
CAR HAD COME UP THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED, HIT MY SON’S
CAR AND TOTALED TWO OTHER CARS. HE WALKED AWAY WITHOUT A SCRATCH. GOD’S
PROTECTION ON HIS LIFE.
BUSINESS MEN AND WOMEN, WE TEND TO TAKE OUR KIDS FOR GRANTED. AS YOU READ
THIS COLUMN 5,000 CHILDREN LIE IN UNMARKED GRAVES IN NEW YORK CITY,
ABANDONED BY A MOM AND DAD.

KEEP THIS “CHECK UP FROM THE NECK UP” AT YOUR DESK OR IN YOUR WALLET AS A
REMINDER HOW FRAGILE OUR KIDS ARE.
TAKE THE DAILY CHECKUP FROM THE NECKUP!
• WHEN IS THE LAST TIME YOU TOLD YOUR KIDS THAT YOU WERE GLAD THEY WERE
BORN IN YOUR HOME AND THAT THEY BELONGED TO YOU?
• WHEN IS THE LAST TIME YOU HUGGED YOUR TEENAGER? (I WOULDN’T
RECOMMEND IN THE FRONT OF THE JUNIOR OR SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL), BUT THEY
NEED TO KNOW THAT THEY ARE LOVED.
• WHEN IS THE LAST TIME YOU GOT STRAIGHT A’S WITH YOUR KIDS?
-BE AWARE OF THEIR ATTITUDES, THE “SIGHS AND ROLLING EYES.”
-BE ALERT TO THEIR FRIENDS-SET THE EXAMPLE WITH YOUR FRIENDS
-BE ASSERTIVE IN YOUR PARENTING. KIDS WANT BOUNDARIES.
-BE ABLE TO ASK THEIR FORGIVENESS. YOU ARE NOT PERFECT!
REMEMBER TO LIVE, LAUGH, LEARN AND LEAVE A LEGACY!

-YOU MANAGE THINGS, YOU LEAD PEOPLE.
-A LEADER IS A PERSON WITH A MAGNET IN THEIR HEART AND A COMPASS IN THEIR

-A GREAT LEADER IS A PERSON WHO CAN STEP ON YOUR SHOES WITHOUT MESSING UP

M IS FOR... MIRROR

m mirror.png

MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL, WHO IS THE FAIREST LEADER OF ALL?
THE WICKED WITCH IN SNOW WHITE LOVED HER MIRROR. EACH OF US LOOK AT A MIRROR
EVERY MORNING BEFORE LEAVING FOR WORK. MIRRORS DON’T LIE.
MIRRORS ARE MARVELOUS CONTRAPTIONS. MIRRORS ARE THE FRIENDS OF MAGICIANS.
WE HAVE ROUND, SQUARE, BIG, AND COMPACT MIRRORS. MIRRORS ARE INSENSITIVE.
MIRRORS SHOW EVERY WART, SCAR AND BLEMISH.
WE ALSO HAVE REAR VIEW MIRRORS THAT REFLECT WHERE WE HAVE BEEN.
AS I LOOK INTO MY LIFE’S REAR VIEW MIRROR AND “REFLECT ON TURNING 50 IN 2002, I
REALIZE THAT WHATEVER REMAINING YEARS I HAVE:
-I WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR OTHERS.
-I WANT MY LIFE TO COUNT.
-I WANT MY LIFE TO HAVE MEANING.
-I WANT TO HAVE AN IMPACT.
-I WANT TO MAKE A CONTRIBUTION TO THIS WORLD.
-I WANT TO DO SOMETHING IMPORTANT WITH MY GOD GIVEN TALENTS AND ABILITIES.
-I WANT TO EXCITE, EXCEL, ENTHUSE, ENJOY AND SERVE OTHERS.
-I WANT TO MAKE SIGNIFICANCE IN PEOPLE. WHEN I DO, SUCCESS WILL FOLLOW.
MANY A CEO HAS TOLD ME, I CLIMBED THE CORPORATE LADDER ONLY TO FIND AT THE END
OF MY CAREER THAT IT WAS LEANING AGAINST THE WRONG WALL.
ZIG ZIGLAR SAID IT BEST, “DO YOUR GIV’IN, WHILE YOU’RE LIV’IN. DON’T WAIT TO SAY

RIGHT, THE MORE YOU GIVE, THE MORE YOU’LL GET.

N IS FOR... NEGATIVE

n negative.png

I HEARD A NEW RENDITION TO AN OLD CLASSIC SAYING LAST WEEK ON HOW WE TEND TO
LOOK AT LIFE: EITHER THE GLASS IS HALF-FILLED, OR THE GLASS IS HALF EMPTY...NOW
TOO MUCH GLASS!
WE TEND TO BELIEVE WE LIVE IN A NEGATIVE WORLD. NEWSPAPERS CARRY NEGATIVE
HEADLINES AND WHEN WALKING INTO WORK EVERY MORNING ...NED AND NELLIE
NEGAHOLIC ARE THERE TO GREET YOU.
WHEN YOU GOT OUT OF BED THIS MORNING AND YOUR FEET HIT THE FLOOR, WHAT WAS
YOUR FIRST THOUGHT? POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE?
REMEMBER THERE ARE POSITIVES TO EVERY NEGATIVE, EVEN A TRAGEDY LIKE SEPTEMBER
11TH. REMEMBER THAT...

  •                     -90% OF THE 50,000 EMPLOYEES OF THE WORLD TRADE TOWERS SURVIVED.

-123 OUT OF 123,000 LOST THEIR LIVES AT THE PENTAGON. 99.5% SURVIVED.
-THE AMERICAN AIRLINES FLIGHT 77 THAT WAS FLOWN INTO THE PENTAGON
COULD CARRY UP TO 289 PEOPLE, YET ONLY 64 WERE ABOARD. 78% OF THE SEATS
WERE EMPTY!
-THE AMERICAN AIRLINES FLIGHT 11 COULD HAVE HAD UP TO 351 PEOPLE
ABOARD, BUT ONLY CARRIED 92. 74% OF THE SEATS WERE UNFILLED.
-UNITED AIRLINES FLIGHT 175 COULD HAVE SAT 351 PEOPLE BUT ONLY CARRIED
65. 81% OF THE PLANE WAS EMPTY.
-UNITED AIRLINES FLIGHT 93 COULD HAVE HAD 289 PEOPLE ABOARD BUT ONLY
CARRIED 45. 84% OF ITS CAPACITY UNUSED.
OUT OF POTENTIALLY 74,280 AMERICANS DIRECTLY TARGETED, 93% SURVIVED OR
AVOIDED THE ATTACKS. THAT IS A HIGHER SURVIVAL RATE THAN HEART ATTACKS, BREAST
CANCER, AND KIDNEY TRANSPLANTS.

T is for... TRUST

t trust.png

Can I Trust you With My Life?
Think of someone you trust. Now think about why you trust them. I have asked this
question many times in my sessions and have found there are numerous people who can’t
think of anyone they trust. How sad. We are living in times where morale is plummeting
and cynicism is surging. In 1968 3/4ths of people trusted those in leadership. In 2,008
3/4ths do not trust those in leadership. 61% of workers in America do not believe
management tells them the truth. The lack of trust in management is the biggest barrier to
building high performance teams. Greed has taken the place of creed.
Most of the time, when we think of someone we trust, it is not a person at work that
comes to mind, it is usually a spouse, close friend, or spiritual leader and yet we are at
work more than we are at home. Mistrust can happen in both a marriage relationship and
work relationship. All it takes is two people in an untrusting relationship believing the
other person is at fault, that the other person should fix the problem and admit their
mistake. Here are some RATS and CHEESE…. ways to destroy and build trust.
R.A.T.S. Trust Destroyers
Reliability Damage- You don’t keep your word. The number one way we break trust with
one another is not returning a phone call, e-mail or voice mail.
Assuming and Presuming- Making a judgment about another individual without getting
the facts first.
Taking advantage- means I will deliberately take unfair advantage of you.
Spreading Rumor Tumors- A rumor is like a tumor. It can destroy health flesh, has its
own blood source, can grow fast, and can be kept hidden out of sight.
C.H.E.E.S.E Trust Builders
C-Commit to your family, faith, friends and your career. Stay true to your commitments.
H- Have a feedback mechanism in place. Tell others what they need to improve and
What they are doing well in that order.
E- Empathize with others. Listen to their concerns and ideas.
E- Example- lead from both your heart and head ,not just your head.
S- Start “Walking the Talk” and “Talking the Talk. Make sure your “video” matches
your “audio.”
E- Examine your integrity. We have seen in recent days what the word “integrity”
has come to mean in corporate America. Conduct an ethical audit!

U is for….ULCER

u ulcer.png

Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired?
What is keeping you up at night? Is it your credit card (The average person has $9,250 on
his or her credit card), your children, conflict with a loved one or someone at work, the
cares and anxieties of this world? We feel like we have diarrhea, colitis, and “Maalox
Moments,” happening simultaneously.

V is for...VALUES

v values.png

What do you Value most in this world?
There is never a wrong time to do the right thing. Values are principles, standards or
qualities considered worthwhile or desirable. Sharing similar values are helpful to
positive interpersonal relationships. We tend to “hang with” those who share similar
values. Differences in values may cause conflict and become a barrier to communication.
How we actually turn out, how we actually behave is the result of the values that were
programmed into us. Values were not part of our original equipment. 90% of our values
are programmed into us by the time we are 10 years old. So what are your most valuable

W is for... WINNERS

w winners.png

Are you a good chief or GREAT leader?
I just finished reading Good to Great by Jim Collins…a must read for every
businessperson in Greenville. One of the companies listed as a GREAT winning company
is Wells Fargo. Now that may not mean anything to you, however, The VP for Wells
Fargo Financial Global Leadership has a daughter and she is presently dating our son.
Webster’s definition of winning is “to achieve victory over others in competition and to
achieve success in an effort or venture.” Collins studied 1400 Fortune 500 companies and
found 11 that modeled greatness…Wells Fargo being one of them. Here are the top 11
GREAT companies: Is your company on the list?
  Abbott labs
  Circuit City
  Fannie Mae
  Gillette
  Kimberly Clark
  Kroger
  Nucor
  Phillip Morris
  Pitney Bowes
  Walgreen’s
  WELLS FARGO
Jim Collins in his book Good to Great says, “ We don’t have GREAT companies because
we have good companies. We don’t have GREAT leaders because we have good leaders.
We don’t have GREAT families because we have settled for good families. We don’t live
GREAT lives because we have settled for the good life. The bottom line is we have
settled.
Many times we decide “where to drive the bus” before first finding the right people with
talent. This causes the organization to become good instead of GREAT. Most of us have
never heard of the CEO’s who run the best 11 companies. It is because these leaders have
personal humility combined with professional will. Collins says:
“Be an enduring leader rather than an efficient manager.”
An enduring leader has personal humility combined with professional will.
He is dedicated to the cause of the organization, not his concern of being
“stroked.” Arrogance does not exist with the enduring leader.
Lombardi said, “winning is not a sometime thing, it’s an all the time thing. You don’t win
once in a while; you don’t do the right thing once in a while; you do them right all the
time. Winning is a habit.” “Unfortunately, so is losing.”
What’s considered a win in your workplace? How do you perpetuate winning?

X is for... EXCELLENCE

x excellent.png

What is your definition of Excellence?
The word excellence has many definitions from A#1, first rate, perfection, cream of the
crop, top notch, premium choice, first class, well done, invaluable, to rare and superior.
It is difficult to find competent organizations.
I was in San Antonio recently and drove by a Shell gas station with the letter “S” burned
out. Unfortunately many organizations could be labeled as Inc. Inc….Incompetence
Incorporated. From fingerprints on the front doors and dirty restrooms to lack of parking
and “abuser friendly” receptionists, even excellent police departments are rare indeed.
Excellent organizations:
  Are brilliant on the basics.
  Do the uncommon things well.
Keep things simple in a complex world.
Insist on hiring talented people who are A+.
  Listen to their associates’ ideas.
  Continually create and innovate.
  Stick to their niche.
Care, cater and capture the customer.
  Breed excellence in others.
  Hire attitude. Teach aptitude.
Know that people aren’t the greatest asset, the right people are.
Place greater weight on character than skills, knowledge and education.
Have compassionate, committed, caring, courageous, cheerleader coaches
Again, Jim Collins book Good to Great comes to mind. Ponder these questions:
“What is your organization the Best in the World at?”
“What can you do better than any other organization?”
“What drives your economic engine producing robust cash flow and
profitability?”
“What is your organization deeply passionate about?
Again, we must look at Southwest Airlines who currently is hiring 4,000 additional
associates. They are not going “belly up” like their competitors. They did not have to be
bailed out after 9/11. They are profitable. They represent excellence. Their philosophy
remains: Employee is #1 the customer is #2. They have a long line of people waiting to
get in. How many do you have?
Are you continually evaluating every area where your customer “touchs” your
organization….your moments of truth?

Y is for... YOU

y you.png

YOU are the brand for your department
It comes down to YOU. You are the organization. It is not bricks and mortar it is a live
human being that is the company. Don’t wait for the company to develop YOU. You take
ownership for your own development. Ask yourself in the last 90 days have I:
Added something to my electronic rolodex?
Have I given a speech somewhere in town?
  Have I published an article
Added a contribution to my resume
Have I read a book or listened to a tape?
Have I taught someone something I have learned or discovered?
Tom Peters defines this as “Personal Branding.” In a world filled with competition for
talent, you need to keep current and up to speed in your area of expertise.
Learn to Market yourself
Keep up with your computer skills.
I took my first computer class at 47! I didn’t want to get left behind.
  Polish your public speaking skills.
#1 fear is speaking in public. #2 is dying. #3 is dying while speaking in public!!!
  Write like a winner.
  Nurture your network.
Remember you are only 6 people away from anyone you want to meet.
  Mind your Manners.
Don’t do anything that will get you in the front page of the paper.
  Learn a language.
  Read to lead
Leaders are readers. Spending just an hour a day in your particular subject will
cause you to become an expert in your field, because the average person reads a
1/5th of a book a year.
Remember your education is K-100. Your personal education is unending. Never think
you have arrived and have all the answers. Have a goal to learn something new everyday.
That will equal 365 “new learnings” in just one year.

Z is for… Z3.

z z3.png

We have come to the end of the alphabet…. What do you do with the letter Z?
My Z3 is not the BMW car. My Z3 stands for zest, zeal and zap, three of my favorite
words. I have a ZEAL or passion for what I do. I have a ZEST for life and I love
ZAPPING people with encouragement and lifting their spirits.
At 59, I have come a long way from receiving ZERO’S in high school. I have had the
pleasure of working on corporate ZERO-BASED budgets. I have ZIG-ZAGGED my
way through traffic on the interstate for a meeting and flown to a ZILLION places
feeling like a ZOMBIE at the end of the week.
I, like you, have caught my ZZZZ’s on a “red eye.” I have even had a “life’s most
embarrassing moment” with my ZIPPER at half mast for a presentation.
Over the past 10 years I have tried to bring practical and applicable tools, tips and
techniques to enhance your effectiveness in the workplace.
PepWorks has been a lifetime dream. The rewards have been tremendous. The people I
have personally met from my leadership summits, team refueling sessions and pep rallies
have been a true inspiration to me.
If you should see my car with the license plate PEP YOU out there on the interstate
please blow your horn and wave. You just might make my day.
Thanks a ZILLION for reading the alphabet!!
